I'm a washing machine specialist and you've been cleaning your clothes all wrong - the three simple changes to make

WHEN it comes to cleaning your clothes you are probably doing it all wrong, but there are some easy ways to improve your washing and drying process.

There are three simple changes people can make to improve their laundry routines, according to advice straight from a washing machine specialist.

In a TikTok video posted by a self-described washing machine specialist, an appliance care technician named Renee weighs in on some tips for better laundry.

The tips were originally dispensed by TikTok user Alex Mac who acknowledged she wasn’t a specialist, spurring Renee to weigh in with her battle-tested expertise.

According to the washing machine specialist, the first simple change people can make for better results with their laundry is to swap out their dryer sheets for a wool ball.

Renee says dryer sheets work to reduce static by leaving a waxy buildup on your clothes.

Wool dryer balls, on the other hand, work without any harsh chemicals and don’t impact the integrity of the clothing by leaving residue behind.

Dryer balls have other advantages like being reusable, meaning they’re more cost-effective and better for the environment.

Second, Renee confirms that using distilled white vinegar is a much better option than using fabric softener.

Much like dryer sheets, fabric softener’s softening effect on clothes actually comes from the chemicals it leaves buildup behind on your threads.

Vinegar on the other hand actually works to soften your clothes because its an acid.

Switching to vinegar will leave you with clothes free of chemical buildup.

Finally, the washing machine expert says people who own high efficiency washing machines should pay attention to the kind of detergent they pick up at the store.

She didn’t recommend a specific brand, but said high efficiency washing machines work best with high efficiency laundry detergent.

Renee points out that most people actually use way too much laundry detergent, and says people should cut back to just two tablespoons.

Based on Renee’s response and added explanations, you don’t have to be a washing machine specialist to figure out hacks to better laundry.

Although there is one thing the appliance care tech said was bad advice: using dawn dish soap in your washing machine.

The product isn’t formulated for washing machines or clothes, and the bubbles can also create problems with the draining process and dry out your duds.
