QUICK LOOK AT THE WEEK
— Why we remember: Memorial Day is not meant to honor the veterans among us but to pay tribute to the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, the observance began after the Civil War and evolved to include military personnel who died in any American war. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. The change went into effect in 1971. In 2000, the National Moment of Remembrance was established as a reminder of the day's significance. At 3 p.m. local time, Americans are asked to pause for 60 seconds to reflect on those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.
