In a recent Driving CBUS podcast, Greg Ubert of Crimson Cup Coffee & Tea talked about his business evolution over the past 30 years, his collaborations with coffee shop owners and coffee farmers, and his hopes for the future of coffee and the company. He also spoke with Co-host Scott McCom, CEO of Hartland Bank, and Clintonville branch manager Kailin Bucklue discussed the entrepreneurial spirit of Columbus.

Columbus, Ohio, November 3, 2021/PRNewswire-PRNewswire/ - Heartland Bank CEO Scott McComb recently interviewed Greg Ubert, founder and president of Crimson Cup Coffee & Tea, to understand the bank’s Drive the CBUS podcast. New co-host Kailyn Bucklew joined the podcast.

The team talked about Uber's 30-year history in specialty coffee, his passion for entrepreneurship, and his love for his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. They also talked about Crimson Cup's focus on beauty and its drive to create a sustainable coffee future.

"It started in 1991, and it is still very exciting for me to be in this business and continue to innovate and do what we are doing," Ubert said.

Today, he leads an award-winning specialty coffee company and serves on the boards of Heartland Bank and Columbus Chamber.

However, 30 years ago, Ubert had just graduated from Harvard University. Although he found a job for a lucrative company in Chicago, he found that he could not fall in love with computer software.

On the contrary, the temptation of specialty coffee and starting a small business overwhelmed him. With high-quality public schools and a supportive business culture, Ohio’s capital seems to be the ideal place to start a new business and raise a family.

"Coffee—or great coffee—just not around," he said. "Considering all the things Columbus has to offer, I don't think Columbus can be a good city for food."

After returning to his hometown, Ubert set up a specialty coffee roaster, with a small roaster in the office in one room. He named his company Crimson Cup after the ripe red cherries on the coffee tree and Harvard's official color deep red.

His goal is to roast the best coffee anyone has ever tasted. Soon, coffee shops and restaurants took pride in serving the Crimson Cup.

However, even with high-quality coffee, it is difficult for some customers to make a profit.

"They don't know what makes them profitable in the coffee industry, what keeps them around, and what keeps them strong," he recalled.

So, after studying coffee shop operations, Uber developed a coffee shop entrepreneurship platform called 7 Steps to Success.

In 2003, he wrote his experience in the book "Steps to Success: A Common Sense Guide to Specialty Coffee Success".

This proven roadmap teaches entrepreneurs with little or no coffee experience how to run a profitable coffee shop based on a great location, quality coffee, and other factors.

To date, more than 300 entrepreneurs in 30 states have followed 7 steps to create a thriving coffee shop.

Crimson Cup coffee shop entrepreneurial consultants guide new owners step by step, from writing a reliable business plan to selecting equipment, hiring and training employees, and so on.

"Training is one thing we did very, very well at the Crimson Cup," Ubert said. "We teach and train our customers how to succeed. If they succeed, we succeed!"

Uber also talked about sustainable coffee farming. More than ten years ago, the company began investing in farmer relations and farming communities, and then formulated the Friend2Farmer plan to have a meaningful impact on coffee growing communities.

“We teach farmers how to make better coffee, and then we can pay more for them. Then they can invest in their farms and communities,” Ubert said.

Crimson Cup also invests in community projects such as schools, filter buckets, and construction of houses for coffee workers.

Looking to the future, Ubert stated that Crimson Cup has begun to emphasize good branding and communication.

"I strongly believe that people all over the world are kind." Ubert said. "If we can see this and let others see it, it's likely to make things better. This is how we will focus on good as our core message."

"Every new local coffee shop or farmer relationship increases the impact of the ripple effect, that is, the focus on goods that spread from our actions to small businesses and communities around the world," he concluded.

To learn the full story of the history of the Crimson Cup, its focus on coffee and coffee farmers and their efforts for a sustainable future, please listen to the podcast.
