Newquay’s town centre has had a light-touch makeover to honour the Queen’s upcoming Platinum Jubilee. Ensuring that visitors to the high street truly get into the regal spirit of this historically significant event, the Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) and Newquay Town Council teams have replaced the existing bunting with new blue, red and white bunting which mimics the colours of the Union Jack.

In a collective town effort, Newquay BID has replaced the old bunting in Gover Lane and Newquay Town Council were responsible for replacing that in Bank Street. With the upcoming celebrations, there is much to look forward to in Newquay.

Newquay BID has also supported Newquay Lions with a financial contribution towards its Lion’s Platinum Jubilee Parade which will start adjacent to the Fore Street carpark on Saturday 4th June at 6pm and will be a fabulous showcase of scooters, tractors and trailers all decorated to reflect different decades of the Queen’s reign. It will also feature a car built in each decade, music from each decade and members of the community are encouraged to dress up for a decade of their choice.

Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) Chair, Jonathan Start said, “those who have been in Newquay town centre very recently have hopefully noticed that it is lined with beautiful new bunting. This is in honour of her Majesty’s seventy year-long reign. It was important that we work together with the council to make sure visitors to the high street and beyond have a royal good time whilst here over this special period.”

Jonathan continued, “don’t forget, that in addition to enjoying our lovely new bunting, you can also celebrate this year’s historically significant royal event by partaking in the official Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon Trail. This family-friendly, augmented reality story-trail is available now and will take visitors and locals alike on an adventurous journey traversing the history of The Queen’s remarkable 70-year long reign.”

From 6pm on Saturday, June 4, more than 60 craft from Marazion and the surrounding areas of Cornwall will take part in a round St Michael’s Mount flotilla as part of the celebrations to commemorate the Queens’s Platinum Jubilee.

Weather and operational considerations permitting, the organised fleet will include the St Michael’s Mount State Barge, Mount ferryboats, the RNLI Penlee lifeboats, luggers, Marazion gig boats, Marazion sailing club boats and three groups of paddleboarders from Ocean High, the Hoxton Special and GoSUP groups.

The flotilla will circumnavigate the Mount in order to pay respect to the Queen who visited the town and Mount in 2012. The State Barge took part in the Thames flotilla that marked 50 years of the reign of Elizabeth II in 2012.

This will be the jewel in the crown of Marazion’s very Cornish and British celebrations which includes street parties, artistically decorated bus shelters, refurbished phone boxes, busking, choirs, beacon lighting, exhibitions of rarely seen town paraphernalia, church services and the town adorned with bunting.

"Whether it’s sharing a cuppa with a neighbour on the doorstep or a bigger bash in the street, join millions of people across the UK to share friendship, food and fun with The Big Jubilee Lunch.

"It's the party that's right up your street, and everyone's invited, so let's take to our streets, gardens and neighbourhoods to have fun and get to know one another a little better. Sign up for your free pack to help you get started."

The Jubilee celebrations are fast approaching, and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) South West would like to wish everyone a happy and safe long weekend.

Covid-19 has not gone away and there are several infectious diseases circulating and we would like to remind people to take care when mixing with people indoors and out.

While the number of cases in the South West are currently low, people need to take precautions – like taking a lateral flow test if mixing with vulnerable family or friends or staying at home if feeling unwell with a high temperature or flu-like symptoms.

Dr Charlotte Bigland, Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA South West said: “While fewer people are wearing masks, it’s still advisable to wear one if you are indoors or if you are mixing with lots of people or on public transport.

"Washing your hands frequently and ensuring you cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing can prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as lots of other common infections. The best protection against COVID-19 is to get fully vaccinated. There are walk-in vaccination centres across towns and cities in the South West.

“Monkeypox is also circulating nationally and internationally, so it’s important to for people to stay vigilant. There has been a notable number of cases identified among people who are gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men, so we are asking these groups in particular to be aware of the symptoms, particularly if they have recently had a new sexual partner.

“Anyone with unusual rashes or lesions on any part of their body should contact 111 or their local sexual health service for advice. If you think you might have Monkeypox, please phone ahead before attending a healthcare setting in person so we can ensure a good clinical experience.”

Dozens of towns and villages across Cornwall have organised street parties and celebrations to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Cornwall Council has received 80 applications to close roads so that people can venture outside to celebrate Her Majesty’s milestone.

Whilst many celebrations for the occasion will not require road closures, those people wanting to hold traditional street parties have had to seek permission. And with the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend stretching from Thursday June 2 to Sunday June 5 they all take place at different times over that period.

Read the full list here.

Motorists travelling to meet family and friends to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee are set to enjoy smoother journeys over the extended bank holiday weekend, with National Highways lifting almost 1000 miles of roadworks.

It will mean that 98 per cent of England’s major A-roads and motorway network will be free from roadworks.

The roadworks will be removed from England’s major A-road and motorway network by 6am on Wednesday 1 June and not put back in place until Monday 6 June.

And with motorists set to make the most of the long weekend, National Highways is urging those travelling to play their part in keeping traffic flowing by ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.

Research commissioned by National Highways shows that only one-in-six drivers check their tyres before setting off on a long journey, meaning some could be taking to the road with a potentially serious vehicle defect.

To underline the risks, separate figures show that a fifth of motorway breakdowns are caused by worn or incorrectly inflated tyres.

Dave Harford, Traffic Officer for National Highways, who patrols the M5, M42, M50 and other major routes, said: “We expect the roads to be busy with people looking to make the most of a long weekend. Our traffic officer patrols will be out on the network to help anyone who might get into difficulty, but it’s important people remember to check their vehicle before setting off.

“The last thing anybody wants on the way to their destination is to have a vehicle breakdown. That’s why it’s really important people spend a few minutes checking the condition of their tyres before setting off.”

The advice from National Highways is simple; check your tyre pressure, tread depth and tyre age including the spare, before you set off on a long journey.

Look out for cuts or wear over the full width of the tyre and don’t forget to check the sidewall.

Dave added: “Although the legal limit for tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, we recommend you don’t let the tread get that low. Changing the tyre at 2mm in summer and 3mm in winter is good practice and maintains overall good tyre performance in all conditions. To check your tyre pressure, visit most fuel and service station forecourts, which have an air machine for checking and inflating your tyre pressure.”

One of Cornwall’s most popular indoor soft-play centres will have a special activity to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign during May half term. One2eleven, in Helston, will throw open its doors every day during the Jubilee week, which runs from Saturday, May 28 to Sunday, June 5.
